Operations Manager


Main Purpose:

Responsible for leading and guiding all Terminals and other Operation staff in safe, efficient, reliable and incident-free operations while ensuring optimum performance and seek improvement to create competitive advantage in terms of customer service, safety, security, asset utilisation and costs (within agreed budgets). Build a culture of operational excellence within the team by providing leadership, motivation, coaching and mentoring

Key Responsibilities:

1) Responsible in ensuring that all standard company processes and procedures are strictly followed by every employee in the Operation of Terminals by adhering to the highest HSSE standards and Engineering specifications of Sstorage and Handling activities terminals .

2) Accountable for the performance of each terminal in maintaining the quality and quantity of products by ensuring that terminals ‘Operating and Receiving, gains/losses are within acceptable limits; resolves issues on product quality and gains/losses and ensures that performance on stock losses and gains are reported while directing corrective action where performance is out of tolerance..

3) Monitors that the Terminals operate within the approved Capex and Opex Budget; continuously drive for cost reduction and improving the level of service; coordinates with Engineering in monitoring and completion of Capex and major Opex projects; that projects are delivered on specs and on-time and recommends improvements in the Terminals

4) Responsible for ensures that requirements and policies regarding HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, Environment) are in-place and strictly followed through continuous education and improvement of HSSE performance , applying SAPS standards in each Terminal; monitors the development of programs and schedule seminars/training/exercise to all employees in the Terminals.

5) Ensures that the Terminal meets or exceeds the expectations of all customers by fast and accurate order taking, on-time delivery with the right quantity and on-spec product. Works closely with other areas of SPU, understanding implications of broad decisions, and successfully implements programmes and initiatives to achieve customer focused operational excellence. Manages Transport contractors and ensures they comply with company operational and driving standards and procedures

6) Leads, motivates and coaches the Terminal teams to deliver outstanding performance on HSSE, Customer Service, Financial and People measures while personally getting involved together with Terminal staff to identify what needs improvement and best practice in-place and recommend actions for items that need improvements and disseminate best practice to other Terminals. 

7) Take account of regulatory documentation required by local law and be the main point of contact with the local ministries:

Assurance of Vehicles policy compliance including vehicle repairs, purchases and sales.
Approval of equipment and services purchases.
Answer Ministry claims and requests.
 

Experience: 

  • At least 5 years experience as a Manager in a major Liquid Petroleum Terminal
  • Managing Terminal engineering projects would be an advantage.
  • Mechanical or Industrial Engineering degree. 
  • Post graduate degree in strategic, operational management or business administration is preferred. 
  • 8-10 years of experience related to similar operations, including up to 6-7 years in a leadership role managing or supervising personnel. 

Skills:  

Bilingual: 
  • English and local language
  • Able to use Microsoft Office Suite applications; Presentation tools and programs
  • Knowledge of the international codes and standards in petroleum terminals (product handling, measurement, storage)
  • Knowledgeable in Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Protection
  • Excellent project, planning, change and time management capabilities
